¿Bailas? / Wanna Dance? A Tango Takeover – Tango Sur
A Tango Gathering on The Dance Floor
A curated celebration of Argentine tango, directed by Anna Alvarez and Pablo Cortazzo, Artistic Directors of Tango Sur.
You’re invited to an afternoon built around live performance, workshops and culture with artists from across the tango world.
At the heart of this takeover are the performances. You will see couples from the tango community perform on The Dance Floor and get a glimpse of a brand-new dance theatre work by Anna Alvarez Compañía. The day also opens its doors to you, with workshops and an open dance floor, so you can move from watching to dancing.
¿Bailas? // ¿Wanna dance?
What to Expect:
- Live performances from leading tango artists
- Kueyen – an excerpt of a new dance-theatre work integrating tango and contemporary dance, by Anna Alvarez Compañía.
- The craft of choreography – a behind the movement session exploring how stage tango is made, led by David Chartoriski and Emma Reyes.
- Open level workshops to get newcomers dancing.
- A family milonga for parents, carers and their little ones.
- An open social dance floor for everyone, guided by the DJ.
What is a Milonga?
A milonga is three things at once: a social event, a music style, and a way of dancing. In Buenos Aires, “vamos a la milonga” usually means a gathering where people meet to dance tango. A milonga is where tango truly lives, in salons and neighbourhood clubs where locals and visitors share the floor.
Practical information
Who is it for? Everyone, audiences and dancers alike. First-timers, seasoned dancers and everyone in between. No need to bring a partner; come ready to watch or to move.
What to wear? Every shade of blue, from sky to midnight, the colours of the Río de la Plata. Wear any shoes you feel comfortable in (heels, jazz shoes, dance shoes, flats or socks); we suggest avoiding trainers or rubber soles.
