Modern flamenco’s greatest rule breaker, Galván ignites flamenco’s Golden Age

To mark the 20th anniversary of this landmark work, La Edad de Oro returns to the stage in a renewed version featuring the voice of María Marín and Rafael Rodríguez on guitar. A modern classic in Israel Galván’s repertoire, the piece has toured extensively around the world, paying tribute to flamenco’s “Golden Age” – the period from the late 19th to early 20th century, when the traditional singing style ‘cante’ and rhythmic movement ‘baile’ reached their peak in form and creative expression.

This is Galván’s most “classic” work. It combines his deep knowledge of flamenco’s roots with the dazzling brilliance of his avant-garde vision. Described by the Daily Telegraph as “modern flamenco’s great rule breaker” Galván crafts a flamenco that is conceptually rich, technically daring, and rooted in tradition.

La Edad de Oro is the ideal introduction to Galván’s language – a perfect gateway for audiences new to his work. He doesn’t preserve flamenco in a glass case; he sets it alight.

What was the Golden Age of Flamenco?
‘La Edad De Oro’, otherwise known as the Golden Age of Flamenco, refers to a significant period in the history of Flamenco, flourishing between the 19th and 20th centuries. This Golden Age refers mainly to cante (singing) and baile (dance), since the guitar would still take many years to solidify it’s place in the performance. The height of artistry and spirit of the genre, few singers (cantaor) or dancers (bailaor) today can match those who defined the Golden Age.
Who is Israel Galván?
Israel Galván is one of the most influential flamenco dancers and choreographers of his generation. Known for his radical reinvention of flamenco language, he blends deep respect for tradition with bold experimentation. Since founding his own company in 1998, Galván has created groundbreaking works such as La Edad de Oro, Solo, Lo Real and La Consagración de la Primavera, earning him international acclaim. A recipient of Spain’s National Dance Prize and the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale, Galván continues to challenge conventions and expand the expressive power of flamenco on stages across the world.
