A line of woman wearing ballgowns and walking down a runway

Originally premiered in 1978 and now returning to Sadler’s Wells in its 44th anniversary year, Pina Bausch’s Kontakthof evokes longing and misguided desires. The piece is brought to life by a group of mature dancers, playing out first encounters, courtship and uncertain romance.

One of the most important pieces in Pina Bausch’s repertoire, Kontakthof was created when she was establishing her place in the world of dance. Seen in a new light following conversations during the pandemic surrounding social issues such as sexism, racism and cultural appropriation, Kontakthof is more poignant than ever.

Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch returns to Sadler’s Wells with this powerful work quietly displaying power struggles that are present beneath the surface. The desire for love, appreciation and equality, the need to be seen.

Image description: A line of dancers moves past us from right to left – women stride forward in high heels and black cocktail dresses or slip dresses in scarlet, gold and silver, their arms lifted to shoulder height, hands folded in to touch their shoulders, expressions solemn.
